Mothers Union

It is just 50 years since Mothers Union, a unique group of people dedicated to making a difference started in Rwanda. It has been a long journey of growth and expansion in the Kigali Diocese, being the first to establish Mothers Union in the entire Anglican church of Rwanda. Kigali diocese in particular is made up of 7 archdeaconries and 42 parishes. These 42 Parishes are all branches of Mothers Union, as of 1st January 2017 Mothers Union had a membership of over 3000 women and are among the most active groups in the Anglican Church of Rwanda. We operate under five objectives which are also known as our core values, these are;

  • To promote and support married life.
  • To encourage parents in their role to develop the faith of their children.
  • To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service.
  • To promote conditions in society favorable to stable family life and the protection of children.
  • To help those whose family life has met with adversity.

To be a world where God’s love is shown through loving, respectful and flourishing relationships.

Mothers Union aims to show Christian faith by the transformation of communities worldwide. We do this through the promotion of stable marriage, family life and the protection of children.

Since Mothers Union began in 1965, its growth has contributed a lot to the church and the nation at large. Women have been taught in every aspect of life especially in the following two areas of focus.

Women have fellowships where they meet to pray for their families, children and other requests. They are included on the church calendar, women lead the service and also preach. They participate in worship and praise, the Mothers Union choir leads this and Mothers Union members intercede for the church and the nation.

Mothers Union has empowered women to be entrepreneurs through craft making. Women have been able to develop their families through credit and saving groups. Through this, women are able to educate their children. Mothers Union mentors girls who are the future Mothers Union members. These girls will continue the growth of Mothers Union which is so important to us. Mothers Union helps the needy in society, it doesn’t discriminate.

We share Christ’s love to all and we believe we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength. (Philippians 4:13)

Mothers Union women participate in different activities. One of them is making crafts for sale. These are in various items such as; beaded hand bags, baskets, African fabric bags, kitchen gloves, aprons, table mats, wallet bags, laptop bags, traveling bags etc.

Each year there one big conference at the diocesan level that brings together all M.U. members throughout the diocese. There are also other events that are carried out in parishes as planned.
