Bishop of Kigali Diocese

Rt. Rev. Louis Aimable Muvunyi

Bishop Louis MUVUNYI was born in 1961 in the eastern province of Gahini, Rwanda.

He was raised in a Christian home and was taught the Christian. His parents were converted during the well-known East African Revival that started in Gahini during the 1930s. At the age of six he started primary education in Rwanda and at the age of 15 went to Jinja senior secondary school in Uganda where he completed O and A Level.

Although Bishop MUVUNYI was raised in a Christian home, he ignored the thought and idea of accepting Christian into his life. This led him far from away from God and he lost Peace, happiness and direction. His life became meaningless. It was not until 1983 that he developed a spiritual hunger which he had never experience before. The words of the prophet Isaiah 6: 18 became the reality in his life. He felt he was a sinner who needed Jesus Christ, the savior. At the 21, Bishop MUVUNYI dedicated his life to Christ and was drawn into evangelistic teaching and leadership ministry in the Anglican Church of Rwanda. From then, his life was never the same.

From 1985 to 1990 Bishop Muvunyi served the Church at Gahini. He is appointed assistant director of Diocesan Environmental Health Project and later became the English language lecturer at Stanley Smith Anglican Bible College. In the early 1990s he left Gahini and joined the scripture Union Ministry in Rwanda, working as driver/ Evangelist with youth in the schools. Then in 1993, he studied at MWANZA Bible Collegein Tanzania where he earned a Diploma I Theology.

Bishop Muvunyi married Winnie Agaba in 1996. The following year he was ordained as a priest in the Anglican Church and was appointed youth pastor in the Diocese of Kigali. In 1999, he continued his Theological studies at Uganda Christian University at Mukono earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Divinity and in 2002 received a Masters in Theology (Bible Interpretation) from the International Christian College(ICC), Glasgow, Scotland. Bishop Muvunyi served as the Archdeacon of Kigali’s Anglican Parishes and the Principal of Kigali Anglican Theological College.

The Revd Muvunyi was consecrated Bishop of Kiga;I, Rwanda in December 2010. He succeeded Archbishop Emmanuel Kolini who retired at the age 65. At his consecration, Bishop Muvunyi pledged to emphasize the expansion of the Aangilcan Church of Rwanda through construction of new churches and preaching the Gospel. He said” we will continue promoting Unity and reconciliation among Rwandans, fight against HIV/AIDS and poverty, as well as promoting education and empowering youth.

Bishop Louis Muvunyi and his wife have been married for 17 years and have been blessed with three handsome: Ignatious(Iggy), David and Barnabas(Barney). The Revd  Winnie Muvunyi, also a priest in the Anglican Church, is the Director of Alpha Comminity Academy in Kanome.
